Xanadu Beach (Freeport City, Freeport District)

Things to do in Freeport District

On the island of Grand Bahama, in the Bahamas archipelago, we find a city of the same name, the second largest in the country, just behind Nassau. As it is close to Miami and Fort Lauderdale, American tourists come to this paradise, only 45 minutes away, quite frequently; as it is a wonderful stopover before reaching the continent. Tourism is usually concentrated on the periphery of the city as in the resort of Port Lucaya, in the south of the island; or the city of Freeport, in the interior of the island.

Near the port we find the market, bustling shops, restaurants and retailers, as well as a marina, where you can moor your boat. In the center of the market is the Count Basie Square, where free activities are held, and sometimes, a casino is mounted. Also fishing tours are carried out and on the coast you can enjoy beaches of fine white sand.

From the marina you can take a bus ($ 1.50) to one of the major shopping centers such as Winn-Dixie and the International Bazaar.

Swimming with sharks or dolphins is one of the possibilities of offered here, as well as learning how to dive, golf, ride a horse, kayak or to take a birding route. In Freeport National Park you can also enjoy mangroves, trekking areas and underwater caves. The best known beaches are Gold Rock Beach, Barbarry Beach, Taino Beach and Coral Beach.
