¿Qué haríamos si compitiésemos contra un barco que sin su foque es capaz de correr y ceñir más que el nuestro?  Yo, persolamente, aceptar la derrota y poco más.  Contra tanta tecnología no se puede competir.

¿ Qué ha sido del Trimmer de mayor?  Esa figura fundamental que se encarga de, con su expriencia y buen hacer como mayor instrumento, optimizar el rendimiento de la vela.  El BMW-ORACLE, no lo necesitaba, disponía de un ordenador que le daba los datos y podía trimar la vela a su gusto en cada punto y sin mayor esfuerzo o mérito que el del ingeniero que lo diseñó.

¿Dónde están los límites de la tecnología? Si buscamos el barco más rápido, no cabe duda, el BMW-ORACLE lo ha encontrado.  Si queremos saber quien es el mejor, yo aun no lo se.  Para ver lo que se vió podríamos eliminar a las tripulaciones y controlar los barcos desde un despacho. Y creo que no es este, o no debería serlo, el objetivo de la Copa América.  Seguro que los que en 1851 dieron origen a esta competición, con el fin de buscar el mejor barco para ser el dueño de la copa de las 100 guineas, ahora se están revolviendo en sus tumbas tras ver en que ha degenerado esta competición, en un principio de vela y ahora no sabría bien de que calificarla.  Cierto es que hay que ir innovando y aportando nuevos desarrollos pero, como todo, debe tener un límite que en esta edición, creo, se ha cruzado.

Esperamos que sirva de lección y se tome nota para futuras ediciones.  Los apasicionados de este deporte queremos ver competir a los mejores regatistas en los mejores barcos y no a grandes regatistas en barcos “automatizados”.

The BMW-ORACLE, did not need it, had a computer that gave him the data and could trim the sail as you like at each point and without much effort or merit than the engineer who designed it.

Where are the limits of technology? If we look for the fastest boat, no doubt, the BMW-ORACLE has found it. If we want to know who’s the best, I still do not know. To see what we saw we could eliminate the crews and vessels from a control room. And I think that this is not or should not be, the objective of the Copa America. Surely those who in 1851 gave rise to this competition in order to find the best boat for the owner of the 100 Guineas Cup, are now turning over in their graves after seeing that this competition has degenerated in a Sailing principle and would not know right now that qualify. It is true that one must go innovating and bringing new developments but, like everything else, must be limited in this edition, I believe, has been crossed.

We hope to serve as a lesson and a note for future editions. The apasicionados of the sport want to see the best sailors compete in the best boats and sailors not big on boats “automated”.

Tras un 2009 caracterizado por las crisis mundial en el que el sector náutico no se ha quedado al margen y ha sufrido las consecuencias de ello, tal vez podamos estar ante el reflote del sector.  Cierto es que, como se reflejan en constantes noticias del sector náutico español, el número de matriculaciones ha descendido considerablemente, pero la edición de 2010 del Salón Náutico Internacional de Dusseldorf puede ser la antesala de la recuperación del sector.

El hecho de que los 17 pabellones estuviesen repletos de expositores provenientes de más de 60 paises, apunta a la recuperación.  Más aun tras conocerse que la feria de Madrid de 2010 ha sido cancelada, en gran medida consecuencia de la organización del año pasado que no dejó contentos a expositores ni asociaciones de empresas náuticas.  Pero tal vez el elevado número de expositores pueda distorsionarse y entenderse como un afán de éstos de mantenerse a flote.

Lo que si que es indudable es que los más de 240.000 visitantes son una prueba de que la demanda vuelve a interesarse por el sector.

Así pues, interés de las empresas y nuevas ganas de los navegantes pueden ser la fórmula que nos haga ver este 2010 la recuperación de este sector.

This online sailing channel is one of my favorite. It would be the top one except that most of the videos are in french (I have to improve it!) and do not have a translation to english. On the other hand, I really like the background music of the videos.

Camera on board Team New Zealand Tornado´s (Aaron Macintosh and Mark Kennedy) in Cadiz, Spain. The cameras are located at the top of the mast and the bowsprit. You can see spinnaker hoists, jibe´s, etc … I really like it! (Unfortunately, Tornado is not in the Olympics any more )

3) Groupama 3
Video aboard Groupama in his bid to win the Jules Verne Trophy. You can see this incredible trimaran sailing at 30 kts (at this moment the were running over 700 miles in 24 hours). From minute 2, it would be interesting for sailors with a “technical” profile. You can see how does the leeward pontoon keel of the trimaran works.

Very good video on board the F18. (Juan Faustin & Lucas Gonzalez Smith [ARG]). I really wanted to sail. They go really  fast!. I would prefered to see some maneuvering on board. May be next time.
