2) Silly boats accidents

3) Strong wind + Spy = lying + broken masts
A little old but very intense video . You can see the ships sailing with more than 25 knots of wind with spinnakers. At the end there is a broken mast. Look what happens to a crew member.

Un estudio demuestra que una parte del Mediterráneo fue seca hace millones de años

Al menos una parte del Mar Mediterráneo fue seca hace millones de años, según un estudio de un grupo de investigadores del departamento de Ciencias de la Tierra y del Medio Ambiente de la Universidad de Alicante (UA). La investigación, de la que han informado hoy fuentes del centro docente, se centra en averiguar si el Mare Nostrum podría desecarse en un futuro. El estudio corre a cargo del grupo de Cambios Paleoambientales, dirigido por Jesús M. Soria e integrado por José Antonio Pina, Alfonso Yébenes, José Enrique Tent, Hugo Corbí y Alice Giannetti.

La navegante británica Dee Caffari y la española Anna Corbella serán el primer equipo femenino en la historia de la Barcelona World Race-Vuelta al Mundo a Dos sin escalas ni asistencias que partirá del puerto de Barcelona el próximo 31 de diciembre. Caffari y Corbella serán las tripulantes del IMOCA Open 60 ‘Gaes’, patrocinado por la compañía GAES Centros Auditivos, que entra así en la vela oceánica de alta competición y que ya fue patrocinador de Anna Corbella en la última edición de la Transat 6.50.

2) Can we go under the bridge?
Inexplicable accident. The boat wants to go under the drawbridge and I think it lacked a little coordination or maybe you wanted to transform in a convertible . If you pay attention, before the crash shows that the bridge is falling.

3) How to moor at 20 knots!
This video shows how the boats are moored in a junkyard for recycling. The ship weighs 19,000 tonnes and hits at 20 knots. I would not be so close!

¿Qué haríamos si compitiésemos contra un barco que sin su foque es capaz de correr y ceñir más que el nuestro?  Yo, persolamente, aceptar la derrota y poco más.  Contra tanta tecnología no se puede competir.

¿ Qué ha sido del Trimmer de mayor?  Esa figura fundamental que se encarga de, con su expriencia y buen hacer como mayor instrumento, optimizar el rendimiento de la vela.  El BMW-ORACLE, no lo necesitaba, disponía de un ordenador que le daba los datos y podía trimar la vela a su gusto en cada punto y sin mayor esfuerzo o mérito que el del ingeniero que lo diseñó.

¿Dónde están los límites de la tecnología? Si buscamos el barco más rápido, no cabe duda, el BMW-ORACLE lo ha encontrado.  Si queremos saber quien es el mejor, yo aun no lo se.  Para ver lo que se vió podríamos eliminar a las tripulaciones y controlar los barcos desde un despacho. Y creo que no es este, o no debería serlo, el objetivo de la Copa América.  Seguro que los que en 1851 dieron origen a esta competición, con el fin de buscar el mejor barco para ser el dueño de la copa de las 100 guineas, ahora se están revolviendo en sus tumbas tras ver en que ha degenerado esta competición, en un principio de vela y ahora no sabría bien de que calificarla.  Cierto es que hay que ir innovando y aportando nuevos desarrollos pero, como todo, debe tener un límite que en esta edición, creo, se ha cruzado.

Esperamos que sirva de lección y se tome nota para futuras ediciones.  Los apasicionados de este deporte queremos ver competir a los mejores regatistas en los mejores barcos y no a grandes regatistas en barcos “automatizados”.

Yesterday finished the 33rd edition of the America’s Cup Sailing in victory for the challenging BMW-ORACLE. Two races were enough to decide who would be the new owner of the Hundred Guineas Cup. Although one could say that one test was enough to make that clear. Following the postponement of Monday and Wednesday and waiting a few hours on Friday, the day raised the warning signal of the first test. It seemed that we were going to attend an exciting duel between the ships faster and with better technology, but ultimately did not. The more than 15 minutes apart between BMW Oracle and Alinghi in the first test cheered some and disappoint many. There would be no show. The defiant had made clear its so overwhelming advantage. After several years of preparation and legal battle, the yachtsmen sailing we wanted to see sailing and more than that “we saw a wing”. What has been the Mainsail trimmer? This central figure in charge of, with its good work and experience as greatest instrument, optimize the performance of the wing. The BMW-ORACLE, did not need it, had a computer that gave him the data and could trim the sail as you like at each point and without much effort or merit than the engineer who designed it.

Where are the limits of technology? If we look for the fastest boat, no doubt, the BMW-ORACLE has found it. If we want to know who’s the best, I still do not know. To see what we saw we could eliminate the crews and vessels from a control room. And I think that this is not or should not be, the objective of the Copa America. Surely those who in 1851 gave rise to this competition in order to find the best boat for the owner of the 100 Guineas Cup, are now turning over in their graves after seeing that this competition has degenerated in a Sailing principle and would not know right now that qualify. It is true that one must go innovating and bringing new developments but, like everything else, must be limited in this edition, I believe, has been crossed.

We hope to serve as a lesson and a note for future editions. The apasicionados of the sport want to see the best sailors compete in the best boats and sailors not big on boats “automated”.
